U17 Girls Match Reports 2005-6

November 13th Cheshire Barbarians vs Lancashire Barbarians (Sandbach)
Won 27-15

Northwich Girls hit form
Northwich’s Amy Griffiths got the ball rolling for Cheshire scoring twice in the opening exchanges. And then she wrapped up the game with the final try of the game to cap an excellent performance.

A beautiful sunny Autumn day at Sandbach and we welcomed players from all over Cheshire, Lancashire and Derbyshire. Sandbach and Northwich formed the backbone of the Cheshire Barbarians team. Aldwinians, Waterloo, Manchester, Ashton on Mersey and Ormskirk combining to form the Lancashire Barbarians team. Many thanks to the Buxton girls who split into two, half playing for Cheshire and the other half for Lancashire.

I am not going to mention any player by name in this summary as their were so many good players from so many clubs it was impossible to get to know everyone on the day. From the first whistle this game was hard fought in every part of the field, the support running and tackling were stand out qualities within both teams. The game was played in great spirit every player played with a smile on their face, which took nothing away from the intensity of their play, but added plenty to the enjoyment of the rugby. In the early stages of the game Cheshire Barbarians forward pack took control and provided a solid platform for their backs to mount several good moves that they converted into points. However, just on the stroke of half time Lancashire hit back with a try of their own making the score at the break 15 – 5. Sadly during the first half the Lancashire Barbarians Captain injured her knee and was taken to Leighton Hospital by Ambulance. I will let everybody know how she is doing once I have received an update from the Aldwinians Coach. But I am sure everyone joins with me to wish her a speedy recovery. Cheshire started the second half well and soon made it 22 –5 following a length of the pitch try from their outside centre. Cheshire then went to sleep, they obviously thought the match was won, however, Lancashire Barbarians had other ideas as their team started to gel together and play some fast flaunt rugby. Lancashire scored two quick tries, which brought them within one converted try difference at 22-15, and all to play for.

Cheshire realising the threat raised their game again and managed to score one more unconverted try to make the game safe just before the end.
A massive thanks to all the players, coaches, parents and helpers who made the afternoon a great success and a fantastic advert for Under 17 Girls Rugby Union.

December 11th U17’s/U14’s Mixed (Sandbach/Northwich) vs Leek (Away)
Won 78-12

We arrived at Leek in glorious sunshine and looked forward a good afternoon of rugby. Leeks side looked bigger in the forward pack than we did, however, nothing seems to phase our girls these days. From the first whistle the forwards again took total control upfront with Alysha, Jenny, Elle, Peachs and Lisa showing that they maybe out sized but they were not to be out played. The harder Leek played the more the forward pack lifted their combined game, showing some great rucking and mauling skills.

The forwards provided a solid platform for the backs, Jordan, Mollie, Jenny, Amy, Thea and Sammy, who used the ball well and soon started to build up the points. Although we did not have it all our own way the girls again proved they are still a force to be reckoned with at this age group.

Well done to all the players who took part in the game, it was good to see so many players enjoying their rugby.Unfortunately Amy Griffiths had to be taken to the local hospital with a knee injury. Both players and coaches alike wish her a very speedy recovery.
