Girls Match Reports 2005-6
November 13th Cheshire Barbarians vs Lanchashire Barbarians (Sandbach) Won 63-12
Northwich Girls hit form Amy Johnson, Thea Breau, Nieve Jones and Emma Vickers all lined up for Cheshire U14’s in their match against Lancashire on Sunday. And the northwich RUFC quartet did the county proud in their 63-12 victory. Breau grabbed a hat trick while there were also tries for Jones and debutante Vickers
Cheshire Barbarians Under 14’ made up from Sandbach, Northwich and Buxton (nearly in Cheshire) welcomed Lancashire Barbarians Under 14 to Bradwall Road on Sunday, the weather was ideal with the sun shining and no wind to make playing difficult. It was decided to play a 15 player game with a full back row and competitive scrums, this was the first time that either team had played to this format but it was wroth it as a learning exercise. The game was also split into 3 x 20 minutes sessions to enable subs and talks with players more frequent to enable the learning to continue for the players.Straight from the kick off Cheshire Barbarians set the scene, by kicking to Lancashire, and immediately securing the ball back by some good follow up work from the forwards. The ball was played down the line and Cheshire had scored within the first three minutes. After two scrums it was decided to go back to uncompetitive scrums as the Cheshire forwards were so dominant in the scrum that it made it difficult for Lancs to get the ball and show how good their backs really were. The scores came steadily for Cheshire throughout the game with the forwards having a field day in securing possession. Thea and Peachs are proving to be a deadly combination in the ruck and mauls. Katie McEvoy also showed her tackling skills by taking down one of the Lancs forwards. Jordan and Nieve shared the scrum half duties, both bringing their different style to the position. Mollie came into her own as stand off having played the first period at Scrum Half.
Two notable breakaway tries came to Cheshire, following some sustained pressure from Lancs that held Cheshire pinned on their own line, however on both occasions the forwards won the ball back and for one Jordan ran the length of the field to score and for the other Mollie did the same. These two scores really broke the Lancs team as they would have hoped to have got something from the pressure that they put on. Lancs were rewarded with two tries, one from the number 8 breaking of the back of a 5 me scrum and crashing over and the other coming from ball won at a lineout and a forward crashing through from 10 metres. A stunning performance by Cheshire which was enjoyed by all of the players and spectators alike, Well Done girls Back to fixtures
November 27th Sandbach/Northwich vs Oswestry Won 42-0 Midlands Cup & Sandbach/Northwich vs Waterloo Won 39-7 Midlands Cup Sandbach/Northwich Under 14 Girls squad travelled to Oswestry to compete in the group stages of the Midlands Cup, where Sandbach were to face Waterloo and Oswestry. Meanwhile in the other group Burton on Trent played host to Worcester and Buxton. Yes I know I can hear what you are all saying it is a very big Midlands!!
In the first game Waterloo beat Oswestry by 39-0. Sandbach faced Oswestry in their first match and comfortably won 42-0. In the final match Sandbach played a very good Waterloo side who had showed some good rugby against Oswestry earlier in the day. However, the Sandbach forward pack soon proved they were to strong and well drilled for the opposition. Katie, Amy, Thea, Steph and Peachs showed that when they are pushed they individually and collectively have the ability to play harder and faster than anyone. They just did what every good forward pack should do, they tackled, carried the hard yards and through excellent rucking and mauling provided a solid platform for their backs.
The half back pairing of Jordan and Molly soon took control of proceedings, the centres Sianne and Steph attacked and defended very well, with the two wingers Caroline and Emma always in support. In what was probably one of the best displays of Under 14 girls rugby we have seen to date Sandbach proved they were just to powerful and well organised for the opposition, the final score was 39 – 7 to Sandbach. Player of the Match went to Molly for a fantastic all round performance at 10. She also made a very memorable tackle on Waterloo's most dangerous runner. It did make us all think that maybe Scott Gibbs tackle in 1997 was maybe not that good after all!! For those of you who have not seen this team play, I can assure you that the opposition are not that bad, it is simply that our Under 14 girls are that good. We are very proud of them indeed. Well done Girls. Sandbach won the group and are to face Burton on Trent in the Semi Final in February. The other semi is between Waterloo and Worcester. A massive thank you to Oswestry Rugby Club for their warm welcome and their fantastic hospitality. The team stars were – Peachs, Katie, Thea, Steph F, Amy, Jordan, Molly, Emma, Steph B, Sianne, Caroline
