U14 win Ashton Tournament
Northwich U14’s notched another tournament win with an unbeaten run against 6 other teams from across the North West. The tournament was run by the RFUW to encourage girls rugby across the region and featured teams from Ellesmere Port, Cheadle Hulme, Vale of Lune and Buxton. As usual Northwich’s defence was extremely secure and as soon as they had the ball Northwich girls had the pace and determination to run at any team. Even with the limited 15 minute matches, Northwich scored 28 tries. Well done girls. A great performance to end a great season. We’re all looking forward to next season. Full scores on fixture page.

Mayfield tour was international success!
Northwich played hosts to a girls touring side from Canada over the weekend of March 11th-14th. The 23 girls from the Mayfield Secondary School in Brampton near Toronto, first got accustomed to the English weather and took in a visit to Conway and Chester. They then took their first training on grass since June last year at Moss Farm in advance of their fixture with a combined Northwich and North West U17 representative side. The match itself proved to be well balanced. The Mayfield girls were a little older than the North West squad, being mostly 18, and as a performing arts school much more athletic. However a combination of a lack of practice and bruising tackling from the North West girls proved a decisive factor as Mayfield were not able to feed their much faster back line. The end result being 20-0 to the North West team. The match and social events over the weekend proved a great success with all the visiting girls being adopted by their hosts and making many friends. There’s also a promise of a return to Canada in the near future. For more tour photos - click here

10 Northwich Rugby Club Girls make North West Squads
Northwich became one of the most represented clubs in this year’s North West regional squads with no less than Ten(10) Northwich girls selected for the U14 & U17’s squads currently being put through their paces at Broughton Parks’ Hough Green headquarters in Manchester. At the U14's age group 6 girls - Melissa Beesley, Thea Breau, Nieve Jones, Jodie Frazer, Amy Johnson and Rochelle Christian were selected with a further four girls at the U17’s age group. These were Amy Griffiths, Cara Pendleton, Hannah Bowcock and Anne Beaumont. During February and March the squads will train with other girls from Cheshire, Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside to hone their skills in preparation for a triangular regional festival on March 20th against teams from Yorkshire and the North East. In April the girls will be also invited to a national tournament.

While both age groups are new this year, Northwich players showed that they are as good as any in the North West, competing with experienced girls who have been selected before. This weekend Northwich will either be training or competing in the North West Merit league with an unbeaten record. Well done Girls

Ladies praised for good ‘sportswomanship’
Northwich Ladies received praise indeed from their rivals after their clash with Bolton on December 12th. In a letter from the Bolton coaches Northwich were congratulated on not only “taking part in one of one of best games of competitive ladies rugby” but for the way they acted after one of the Bolton players was injured towards the end of the game. Bolton coaches Mark & Jon Paul Hardman said after the game said that “the courtesy and sportsmanship shown by Northwich Ladies with the unfortunate conclusion to the game was second to none”, “when we finally managed to move our player off the pitch in the disappearing light it was unbelievable to see all the Northwich players waiting to clap her from the field of play having waited around for over half an hour. A true credit to the sport and to Northwich Rugby Club“.
Good luck Bolton with your remaining fixtures.

Northwich Under 14 Girls with the tournament trophy after wins over Buxton, Vale of Lune, a Barbarians side and a draw with Sandbach.

U14’s win RFU Tournament
On Sunday Northwich hosted an U14’s tournament organized by the RFUW for teams across the Cheshire and Lancashire area. 5 full squads competed with 8 clubs represented including local rivals Sandbach, Buxton, Vale of Lune in Lancashire, and a Barbarians team made up from clubs from Ormskirk, Ashton-on-Mersey and Old Alwinians.
The tournament was played in a round robin basis with every team playing each other to make sure everyone got plenty of match experience.
Everyone enjoyed a great afternoon’s rugby watched by a good crowd. In the end experience proved to be the key and Northwich won the overall tournament by tries scored over Sandbach a close second place. Darting runs around the scrum from Nieve Jones helped secure a number of tries for Northwich as well as set up a platform for Thea Breau, Trina Tulloch and Melissa Beesely to score. Northwich forwards proved themselves again to keep possession in the loose, despite good forward play especially from Buxton and Sandbach. Good runs from Ellie Cornish and Jody Fraser also helped keep Northwich going forward with good pressure and tackling throughout from all the Northwich backs.

Girls feature in RFU’s Touchline Magazine

Northwich RUFC win Sport England grant
Thanks to the tireless community work done by the club and to the club’s accreditation status, Northwich made it a double celebration last week when they were awarded a Sport England ‘Sport for All’ grant for £4540 towards the development of girl’s rugby in the area. Phil Clarke who won the award on behalf of the Junior Section of the club explained, “This is the second time we have won a Sports ‘Awards for All’ grant and it will give us the opportunity to bring girls rugby again into not just junior schools, but High Schools and College of Further Education. We’ve had such a positive response from schools and colleges but the PE staff often don’t have the time, or necessary qualifications to teach rugby to girls. All they need now is contact us and we’ll be able to actively help”.
